Pursued by Bear
Wine has been a longtime passion for Washington native Kyle MacLachlan. Determined to find a great Cabernet to feature at his wedding reception, he took a closer look at some of the wine that was coming out of his home state, specifically from Walla Walla. "I knew Washington was producing some really good wines and was familiar with names like Leonetti and Quilceda Creek", said MacLachlan. "What I didn't know was that the quality ran much deeper and there are some amazing wines that are now becoming well known. It was during this time that I met and got to know Eric Dunham, winemaker at Dunham Cellars in Walla Walla." Both men hailed from eastern Washington, have a similar sense of humor and a friendship developed. A few years later, when MacLachlan decided to create a wine of his own, he asked Eric to partner with him on Pursued by Bear. The name of the wine is inspired by perhaps the most famous of all stage directions, exit, pursued by bear from Act III, scene iii from Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. "It was with a wink that I named the wine 'pursued by bear'. I hoped to catch a potential customer a little off guard, make them smile and say 'what is this?' It's a funny and unexpected phrase that's not only a nod to my theatrical roots, but also plays to my sense of humor. It just seemed to fit what we were trying to do," said MacLachlan. Born and raised in Yakima, Washington MacLachlan felt strongly about making wine in the Pacific Northwest. "My father is still up in Yakima and part of this project was about spending more time with him, bringing him to Walla Walla to participate and feel part of this. I was also motivated to make great wine in Washington and support my home state's growing wine industry." The 2005 Pursued by Bear has been aged for a little over two years in 100% new oak Taransaud barrels and bottle-aged for another year. A blend of three Washington varietals, Cabernet, Merlot and Syrah, it was released September 08. The wine has great balance and bright flavors of berry, plum and Bing cherry and should mature for a good number of years. |
